Ukrainian ferroalloy exports saw a dramatic increase in January 2025, reaching 8.33 thousand tons, up from just 0.2 thousand tons in January 2024, when major producers were mostly idle. This information is based on data from the GMK Center. The latest figures mark a significant recovery for the industry as exports increased by 71.1% compared to December 2024, achieving the highest level recorded since August last year.

Algeria, Poland, and Turkey were the primary importers of Ukrainian ferroalloys in January, absorbing 3.73 thousand tons, 3.32 thousand tons, and 0.8 thousand tons, respectively. This marks a shift in the market as Italy, a previous major importer, has halted imports, while Algeria has stepped in to fill the gap. Revenue from ferroalloy exports in January 2025 amounted to $8.65 million, a stark increase from $4.66 million in December 2024 and $0.86 million in January of the previous year.

In 2024, production at Ukrainian ferroalloy plants plummeted by 49.4% year-on-year, with an output of 108.2 thousand tons, following a major downturn when the industry halted operations in late 2023. Export totals for 2024 were 77.32 thousand tons, a significant decline from the 344.17 thousand tons in 2023. The year 2022 saw exports of 349.56 thousand tons, and 2021 recorded even higher volumes at 668.54 thousand tons.

Despite the positive uptick in January exports, the outlook for 2025 remains largely pessimistic. According to Sergiy Kudryavtsev, Executive Director of UkrFa, escalated electricity costs and concerns over supply stability pose ongoing challenges to the industry. Data from IndexBox highlights a cautious sentiment in the sector, suggesting that the recent uptick might not lead to sustained recovery ambitions in the near future.
